Visual Landing Aid (VLA) Lighting Systems

With the assistance of VLA Lighting Systems and supplemental equipment, helicopters can now make missions to and from Air Capable ships with advanced visual cues.  The VLA Lighting System enhances flight deck illumination, depth perception cues, and obstruction definition.  The lighting equipment provides visual cues to pilots, allowing for safer helicopter operations under various mission requirements.

Features:
  • VLA lighting and supplemental equipment provides the ship with the capability for conducting safe night helicopter operations for:
          1. Approach and Landing (Take-off)
          2. Approach and Vertical Replenishment
          3. Approach and Helicopter In-Flight Refueling (HIFR)
  • The Wave-off Light System allows for increased control of emergency landings/ launchings
  • The Deck Status Light System Provides both the helicopter pilot and flight deck crew with crucial information
  • Ships designated for LAMPS (Light Airborne Multi-Purpose System) Mk 111 rast helicopter operations require additional lighting equipment over the LAMPS Mk 1 VLA systems
  • Additional equipment increases the capability of the VLA system to handle helicopters operating in more demanding environmental conditions.
Benefits:
  • Pilots have increased acuity during missions, increasing mission safety
  • Allows for increased communication between the helicopter pilot and the flight deck crew
  • With adjustable lighting, pilots have increased control over their surroundings
  • Enhanced flight deck illumination, depth perception cues, and obstruction definition provide pilots with a more comprehensive view of their environment, allowing for better navigation

Stabilized Glide Slope Indicator System (SGSI)

Designed for air capable and amphibious assault ships, the SGSI system is an innovative electro-hydraulic-optical landing aid which allows pilots to visually establish and maintain the proper glide slope for a safer landing.  The SGSI system is an essential part to ensuring the protection of assault ships and cargo.

Equipped with green, amber, and red lights, the SGSI system provides an easy-to-read indicator of the glide slope.  A single bar lights up as green when the aircraft is above the correct glide slope, red when below, and amber when at the perfect glide slope.  The pilot is able to maintain the correct glide path to the ship’s landing pad by varying the aircraft altitude in order to maintain the amber light.  In order to stabilize the glide slope, a light cell is mounted on an electro-hydraulic stabilized platform, moving the platform in an opposite direction to the ship’s pitch and roll axes.

Features:
  • Prevention of incorrect glide slope
  • Automated, and easy-to-read lighting system
  • Reduction of platform dynamic errors through the failure detection circuit
Benefits:
  • In high stress circumstances, pilots can take comfort in the single bar of light which carefully instructs them on how to land safely in aquatic situations
  • The SGSI seduces the amount work required of pilots to ensure a precise landing, and enables them to focus on the other factors involved in landing a plane
  • By proving its reliability and durability in complicated situations, the SGSI promotes a sense of security for pilots and passengers

Showcase for Commerce

June 1, 2010 - June 3, 2010
City:
Johnstown
,
Province:
Pennsylvania
Country:
United States

Started in 1991 as a local exhibition of area businesses, the Showcase for Commerce is now the largest business and industry trade show in the region and a nationally renowned defense contracting exhibition and symposium.

Now in its 20th year, the Showcase is the ultimate opportunity for local companies to connect with major defense prime contractors for subcontracting and partnering opportunities.  In the last decade, those connections have resulted in over $2 billion in contracts for participating local businesses.  The Showcase now also provides direct links to Federal and Pennsylvania government agency buyers through its Government Procurement Expo.
